Resources and
Materials for
Libraries

Once Upon a Reader makes it easy for Minnesota libraries, large and small, to participate in the program with a minimum of staff planning time. A wide range of support materials are available, either for free or for purchase. Free materials — available to download below — include suggested storytime curriculum, original song and rhyme mp3s, craft and flannelboard activity templates, a scavenger hunt, and other passive program ideas. For a quick way to encourage pre-K families to engage in early literacy skill-building at home, try the free activity sheet Ten Bubbles: An Epic Early Literacy Adventure, which offers pre-K families fun Every Child Ready to Read 2 (ECRR2)-based challenges themed around Ten Pigs: An Epic Bath Adventure.

Participating regional library systems in Minnesota will receive at least one author-illustrator visit (“Traveling Trunk Show”), and the option to schedule more. Trunk shows are scheduled based on author availability, and at the discretion of each region’s director (or their designated trunk show liaison). Reach out to your region to learn more about trunk shows in your area.

Participating regions will also receive a complete set of the paid supporting materials: a Ten Pigs Play! Kit, an Epic Storytime Kit, and a Story Stroll. Additional materials are available for ordering below. Before placing an order, please check with your regional library for information about the availability of kits in your region.

The Minnesota Association of Library Friends (MALF) provides matching funds to any local Friends group that would like to support its libraries with additional materials (excluding Story Strolls and Trunk Shows). MALF membership is required for Friends to receive the match, limit three items per group.
